BORN TO BE WILD
Jackson Mullane, better known as Outlaw on Channel 7’s hit revival series Gladiators, is one of 14 elite athletes who take on challengers in 13 games that call upon strength and brains to win. We ask Mullane what it takes to be a Gladiator.
How did you become part of the Gladiators team?
I had to pass many challenging physical and mental tasks. I found I was up for the challenge and was rewarded with my spot on the show.
How did you prepare for the role of Outlaw?
I’ve always kept myself in good condition, but to get super-fit to compete as a Gladiator I had to step it up. I took on a tough training program backed with a strict diet. Training took four hours each day – weights, aerobic training and injury prevention, like stretching.
Do the Gladiators ever train together? How do you maintain your fitness level?
We have many training sessions together to maintain unity in the Gladiator camp. It’s good having others there to push you when you want to give up. I make sure I eat right and train every day. During filming, I stretch, fight or do muscular endurance training. When we’re not filming, it’s cardio in the morning and strength in the afternoon. Breakfast is a bowl of oats and a protein shake. Brunch is a chicken breast and rice. Lunch is a six-egg omelette with ham and mushrooms. Dinner is a 400g steak with vegetables and supper is a chicken breast and salad. My diet weakness is chocolate. It’s hard for me to give it up.
What do you like most about being on such a physically demanding show?
I love challenging my physical capabilities, being able to compete in skill-demanding tasks is amazingly fruitful, especially when it involves beating opponents.
Indoor or outdoor training?
I like to mix it up. Training outdoors is always less monotonous. I like training in the sand hills – that’s a workout.
How do you wind down?
I like to play the guitar or piano.
