THE FUNNY THING ABOUT SUNBURN

A Mix FM radio presenter and a regular on Channel 7’s Morning Show, Tom Gleeson has just returned from entertaining the troops in Iraq. We tracked him down before this month’s gig at Sydney Opera House.

When did you realise you could make people laugh?
When I was a kid I had red hair and freckles. The only way I could get attention from pretty girls was to make them laugh. So I had this feeling that I was funny. Years later, when I was in a band, I berated the audience for not clapping enough. The angrier I got, the more they laughed. I thought: there might be something in this.

Is being good at what you do just about saying funny things?
Pretty much. It’s saying funny things but also saying them in the right order. Making up the funny things is the hardest bit! Making up funny things that haven’t already been made up by someone else, that’s even harder again.

Some comedians are only funny when performing. Do you have a split personality?
I’m still funny off stage. I think I might actually be at my funniest while around friends and family but that’s with everyone joining in. I’m not funny all day long. I don’t think anyone would find me funny while I’m packing my dishwasher or folding undies.

Tell us about visiting the troops in Iraq.
It was an amazing experience. I’m not for the war but I found out that not everyone in the army is for the war either. Australia is at war at the moment and, instead of burying my head in the sand and pretending it’s not happening, I became more informed.

You’ve performed internationally, what is a common thread of humour?
All around the world, even where English is a second language and even in war zones, people find redheads getting easily sunburnt hilarious.

How big is your gig in Sydney?
Pretty big. It sold out at the Melbourne Comedy Festival this year so I wanted to bring it to Sydney, which is where I started in comedy. It’s about entertaining the troops, starting bushfires, scaring my mates and buying a Monaro.

If you hadn’t taken the funny road, what would you have been?
There really never has been a back-up plan… maybe a mathematics teacher.

Tom Gleeson – Tom On at The Studio, Sydney Opera House, 11–22 Dec. Tickets from AU$29.90, tel: +61 (2) 9250 7777.
