WORDS ROBERTA MUIR
PASSION BY THE PINT
If you’re visiting Hawaii, be sure to check out Kona Brewing Company’s recently released Wailua Wheat, a wheat ale brewed with tropical passionfruit. It’s available at the company’s Koko Marina Pub in Hawaii Kai (Oahu) and Kona Pub & Brewery in Kailua-Kona (Big Island), as well as on tap at restaurants throughout the islands and in shops. The name and packaging pays tribute to Hawaii’s breathtaking scenery, celebrating Wailua Falls on the island of Maui. What a delicious souvenir!
WHISKY WISHLIST
Need a special gift for someone with good taste? Glenmorangie has just the thing – a bottle of their classic 10-year-old single malt whisky with two miniature bottles of their wood-finished whiskies in a luxurious gift box. Glenmorangie’s best casks are those which previously held American bourbon. Their unique range of wood-finished malts mature in American oak casks for over 10 years before being transferred for further maturation into pipes that previously held port, sherry, madeira or burgundy. The Father’s Day gift-pack comes with a miniature Burgundy Wood Finish, with its finale of raspberries, plums and cocoa powder, and a miniature Port Wood Finish with hints of port and walnuts. AU$69.99.
ORANGE WINES
One of Australia’s up-and-coming cool-climate wine regions, Orange, comes to Sydney on 10–16 September. The visit culminates in Taste Orange Sunday on the 16th, with wine and food stalls, the Taste Orange Table long lunch, music, wine and food demonstrations and tastings at Bondi Pavilion. Tel: +61 (2) 6360 1990.
SOMETHING’S BREWING
Ever fancied making your own home-brew? Then sign up for Brewology 101 at Brisbane’s own Brewniversity in the award-winning Brewhouse. It’s not a typical walking tour: visitors take up prime position within the beer hall-inspired restaurant to learn about the concepts of brewing, and get the opportunity to ask for one-on-one advice from brewmaster Grant Clark (a walking encyclopaedia on beer and home-brewing). From AU$20. 142 Albert St, Brisbane, tel: +61 (7) 3003 0098.
SAND AND SILVER SCREEN
Whether you’re after sunset cocktails on a day bed, a meal of Mediterranean delights prepared by ex-Hugo’s chef Phillip Davenport, or late-night grooves, Ku De Ta’s beachfront location and big-name DJs make it one of the spots to relax in Bali – any hour, any day. On 4, 11 and 18 September you can also settle among the cushions and coconut trees, caipirinha in hand, and enjoy some classic films on the giant outdoor screen. Sublime. Tel: +62 (361) 736 969.
