WRITER’S COMPETITION

Holidaying in Honolulu was a long-time-coming dream; I’d saved for a while and finally my hard work paid off – my dream came true in May and I found myself sitting in Jetstar’s plush StarClass crossing Hawaii off my “to visit” list. In my dream, I’d imagined Honolulu as endless stretches of golden beaches and turquoise sea, and that’s exactly what I got! Throw in a couple of surfers, cocktails with paper umbrellas, luau feasts and flower necklaces, and in a flash, my holiday was exceeding my dreams!

I spent an amazing, activity-packed 10 days in the city with three girlfriends. We tried to visit most attractions, but at the end of every day we gravitated towards Waikiki beach – which isn’t that hard to do. Events are held on the beachfront every evening, and without fail we’d be entertained for hours by an amazing local band or just by sitting and chatting with local characters. We found people to be kind and friendly and ready to help (or shout us a beer) if we were looking lost.

My girlfriends and I were lucky enough to befriend a family, and on our final night they threw a traditional luau. It was a magical experience and something I’ll treasure forever. The family plans a trip to Sydney soon, but I have no idea how to show them a typically Aussie aloha (welcome); somehow, fish and chips on Bondi beach doesn’t seem to compare to a Hawaiian luau!
