Liquids for Health.

WORDS ROBERTA MUIR

DEEP SEA TREASURES

The health elixir omega-3 is now available in a sweeter form than fish. Boost Juice Bars have created Pocket Rocket, an orange, pineapple and passion fruit juice containing more than 700mg of omega-3, plus the Recommended Daily Intake of vitamins C, E, B6 & B12, as well as good doses of dietary fibre, antioxidants, folate, iron, zinc and selenium. And unlike omega-3 capsules, there’s no toe-curling fish taste, just fruit flavours. Available in Boost Juice Bars nationally for AU$4.95.

BEER CLUB

In an effort to create the best organic beer to complement great food, Barossa Valley Brewing (BVB) have put together a tasting panel of some of the country’s most notable foodies, including chef Matthew Kemp from Sydney’s Restaurant Balzac and Lyndey Milan from Channel 9’s Fresh. BVB, makers of the delicious Bee Sting beer, are holding tasting and discussion sessions in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria this January to gather feedback for their expert panel. To become a BVB tester register at www.bvbeer.com.au.

IT’S EASY BEING GREEN

Nudie juice has gone green with its latest release, the “lots of green fruit, wheatgrass & more” nudie crushie. With twice the Recommended Daily Intake of vitamin C, a day’s fruit in every bottle (think apple, pear, kiwifruit) and the addition of wheatgrass to aid digestion, blood pressure and healing, it’s almost a bonus that it tastes great too. AU$3.50 for 250ml from Coles and Woolworths.

FOR TEATOTALLERS

It’s not easy drinking the two litres of water per day that experts recommend, but it’s certainly easier with Italian mineral water producer San Benedetto’s range of iced teas. They’re 89% pure spring water from Italy’s Dolomite Mountains, with a touch of sweet and refreshing peach, lemon or green tea flavours. Forget the fizzy drinks and coffee, and gulp this healthy cuppa at your local café or deli. AU$2.10 for 500ml and AU$3.25 for 1.5 litre.

CLEAN MACHINE

Make sure your tap water at home is as clean as possible with Sunbeam’s portable BRITA Water Filter and Chiller. It removes chlorine, heavy metals like lead and copper and other water-borne impurities, leaving the fluoride and other essential minerals. Fast and simple to use, find it at department stores and electrical retailers nationally.
AU$99.95.

LIQUID GOLD

Three years ago, Emma Welsh and Tom Griffith tired of corporate life and launched a range of fruit juices. The newest Emma & Tom’s product is out this month.

Tell us about your new product.
It’s a range of five vitamin-enhanced waters with 25% Recommended Daily Intake of vitamins and minerals, in the flavours of pink grapefruit, orange & mandarin, raspberry & cranberry, lemon & lime, and blueberry green tea.

Why do your juice blends also contain things like herbs and seaweed?
All of our juice blends have a nutritional benefit. Extreme C, for example, contains orange, apple, guava and strawberry juices with acerola berry and rosehip – two naturally occurring, very high sources of vitamin C. It’s a vitamin top-up to help people look after themselves.

Do you ever bend the rules a little and go out for a drink?
Absolutely, there’s nothing wrong with a couple of beers. Current favourite places include Transport (+61 (3) 9654 8808) in Federation Square, Cookie (+61 (3) 9663 7660) on Swanston Street and, to get back in touch with that real ‘after work crowd’, The Long Room (+61 (3) 9663 7226) on Collins Street.

Emma & Tom’s juices are available at David Jones, Macro Wholefoods, good cafés and delis.
